Syrian man known as 'the Gravedigger' to tell of atrocities

The Gravedigger is known by a codename due to ongoing threats against him and his family in Syria.

For seven years, a man known as "the Gravedigger" reportedly oversaw the burial of thousands of dead and tortured bodies in mass graves in Syria.

The Gravedigger is known by a codename due to ongoing threats against him and his family in Syria.

The Syrian government denies killing people in detention, but the Gravedigger is due to give his testimony before a committee hearing in the US Senate.

The UN estimates that since March 2011, about 350,000 Syrians have been killed.

Mouaz Mustafa is the executive director of the Syrian Emergency Taskforce, which advocates for justice and accountability for war crimes in Syria. He tells Newsday the Gravedigger “will remind everyone of what we know has not just happened, but what continues to happen to this very day. Mass graves are still being dug".
