The cost of childcare: ‘If I was on my own, it would be impossible’
'If you're a woman with a baby you'll miss out on £70K in wages over the next decade'
If you're a woman and you have a baby you're going to miss out on nearly 70 thousand pounds in wages over the next ten years, that's according to new research from the cross party think tank the Social Market Foundation. It also found women on lower incomes face the biggest losses in earnings in their child’s early years
Meanwhile the charity Pregnant then Screwed surveyed 20,000 women this year and 43% of mums told them the cost of childcare had made them consider leaving their job while 40% said they have had to work fewer hours than they’d like because of childcare costs
Well the Social Market Foundation has launched a cross party commission to look into the costs of childcare.
On ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, Emma Barnett spoke to James Kirkup, the Director of the Social Market Foundation, Ellie Gibbs, a senior mental health nurse working for the NHS with two children aged 1 and 3, and Shannon Pite from the Early Years Alliance, a charity which represents nurseries, pre-schools and childminders.
