Rebranding Turkey
Many were caught by surprise earlier this year when Turkey started a campaign to rebrand its internationally recognised name as Türkiye. The Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said that the new name “represents and expresses the culture, civilisation, and values of the Turkish nation in the best way”.
Last week, the UN accepted the Turkish government's request to change its international name. In an essay for Weekend, Turkish writer and journalist Kaya Genc ponders the what he thinks might be the 'real' reasons behind his country’s request.
