Amazon indigenous communities face illegal mining threat

A report by Hutukara in the indigenous territory has found that communities on the Brazil-Venezuela border are facing increasing abuses from illegal mining.

The search continues for an indigenous activist and British journalist who went missing in the Brazilian Amazon ten days ago. Reports of finding bodies have been quickly dismissed by police.

Bruno Pereira, 41, has often written about indigenous affairs, and is an expert on isolated tribes in the Amazon. He is said to have faced threats due to his reporting.

Another community under attack there is the Yanomami community.

A new human rights report by Hutukara in the indigenous territory has found that communities on the Brazil-Venezuela border are facing increasing abuses from illegal mining.

Mauricio Ye’kwana is a member of the Ye'Kwana community, and launched the report.

He spoke to Newsday saying, "I received many threats from illegal gold miners, I actually left because of these threats. I had to leave to not run the risk of losing my life. The gold miners killed my uncle in 2019, they killed him because he didn't want gold mining in indigenous lands. They took him to a waterfall, they wrapped him in a fabric and used stones to weigh him down. We never found him, the reason we know this story is because he was with his son, my cousin, and he managed to escape."
