Mexican political advisor killed by lynch mob

Daniel Picazo was dragged into a field and set on fire after being falsely accused of child kidnapping on messaging groups.

A Mexican political advisor has been killed by a lynch mob after child kidnapping accusations were spread on messaging groups, authorities say.

Daniel Picazo, 31, was attacked and beaten by a crowd of around 200 people in the central state of Puebla.

He had been visiting the town of Papatlazolco when he was cornered by a mob of individuals, before being dragged into a local field and set on fire.

Local officials have called the attack an act of "barbarism".

Jan Hootsen is a freelance journalist based in Mexico, he provided Newsday with more details on the case.

He said, "The congresswoman who Daniel Picazo worked for responded with shock and with sadness, and many congress people actually joined in and they expressed their horror at it. But so far it has not led to any promises from the federal or the state government (the Puebla state government), that any specific steps will be taken to avoid lynchings in the near future, which is something that is actually really needed because this is a problem that's been going back for quite some time, and it's increasing in it's frequency."
