What do you think when you see the St. George's Cross?

Whether the flag is proudly hung from a window, dotted around your local, or waved manically during a football match, does your opinion of it stay the same? For some, it’s a bold representation of our country that shows its strength, unity, resilience, and openness. For others, it's more problematic. They may associate the flag with more negative connotations of violence and a difficult history of nationalism.

When creating this short, poetic documentary we aimed to explore the nation’s ever-evolving identity through defining images such as the St. Georges Cross. The flag seems to spark a lot of reaction, but rarely fair conversation and balanced debate.

Through interviews that offer a wide variety of differing opinions and views from individuals in contemporary England, the film uncovers a shared, middle ground, sparking a conversation about identity where contrasting opinions co-exist to help enlighten the controversy.

The film features the voices of 5 individuals from a variety of different backgrounds, professions, and ethnicities, spanning multiple generations, all with differing opinions on their English identity and the images that tend to define it. Their voices accompany a series of poetic vignettes that represent contemporary England. Each vignette creates a slice of the England we live in today, carefully crafted from the opinions and anecdotes of our subjects.
