Rwanda 'undeterred' by delay to UK refugee scheme
Rwandan officials are not deterred by legal delays to the British government's scheme to crack down on migrants by sending some of them on a one-way ticket to Rwanda.
In Rwanda, officials are patiently awaiting the first plane load of migrants to the UK to arrive in the East African country under a deal between the two countries. The first flight of refugees from the UK to Rwanda was halted by the European Court of Human Rights, prompting the senior interior minister, ѿý Office Secretary of State, Priti Patel - to release a statement saying she is disappointed by the news, but is currently working on the next scheduled flights to take place.
Newsday heard from Doris Uwicyeza Picard who is the chief technical advisor to the Rwandan Minister of Justice. She said the Rwanda government wasn’t deterred by this development.
“Courts have validated this policy... and under this partnership they will be granted a generous package of benefits and be able to live a dignified life. Rwanda has an intimate connection with the plight of refugees and asylum-seekers - if you know the history of [the genocide in] Rwanda, you'll know most of us were refugees ourselves at some point.”
