Tech giants form Metaverse standards

The Metaverse is an internet system which is both universal and fully immersive, driven by augmented and virtual reality.

We all see the world wide web as a dominant platform in which we can access information and online resources at the click of a button.

However, what does it mean to develop digital technology which will exist outside of the web space?

This is where the Metaverse comes in.

If you haven't heard of it, the concept involves an internet system which is both universal and fully immersive, driven by augmented and virtual reality.

And now, in an effort to ensure that competing developers create virtual technology which is compatible for all users, tech giants including Microsoft and Facebook-owners Meta have formed what's being described as a Metaverse Standards Body. But what will this actually mean?

Adi Robertson is a senior reporter for The Verge, she told Newsday, "The intention here is to (sort of) bring together a lot of the different players in what is currently called the Metaverse - which is sort of the 'future internet',
and get them working on practical implementations, cross industry standards, that you might end up seeing across a bunch of meta-universe services".
