First African to win Basque Culinary World Prize
Chef Fatmata Binta has won the Basque Culinary World Prize 2022, the award is described to be the Nobel Prize of Gastronomy.
She is the first African to receive the award, and she won it for her campaign for sustainable eating and upholding traditional methods of Fulani culinary.
She joined Newsday live from Accra in Ghana, saying "Once I went to culinary school, I worked in the hotels, I saw how food was being done, you know, the stories we're told, I wanted to cook food that I grew up eating. And the food I grew up eating is very much sustainable, because it's very much centered about the lifestyle of the Fulani people. These are people who are always on the go, these are people who are minimalist, these are people who don't carry much. So I was very much fascinated by that, and I wanted to tell that story".
