Melilla: Death toll from mass migrant incursion questioned
The authorities in Morocco say at least 23 migrants and two police were killed on Friday when a huge crowd tried to cross into Spain's North African enclave of Melilla.
Local NGOs have reported a higher migrant death toll but according to Alicia Martinez, a journalist in Melilla, it is not yet clear how many people died. She told Newsday: “Spain and the European Union are paying Morocco in order to control the migrant route. We are democratic countries, let's say, and Morocco is not, so they do whatever they want with the migrants.”
