Rappler will appeal shut down
The Philippine news website co-founded by Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Ressa, has been told by a regulatory body a decision to revoke the company’s licence to operate has been upheld following an appeal.
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) had ruled in January 2018 that the media company was owned by foreigners, a violation of the Philippine constitution.
Rappler denies being foreign-owned, a claim backed by Phil Robertson, Deputy Asia Director for Human Rights Watch. He tells Newsday: “Rappler’s compliant and the SEC should… abandon this effort to shut them down…This is part of a determined campaign by President Duterte to shut down his critics in the media and the question is whether the incoming president, Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is going to continue that or not?”
