Will Grenada cut ties with the British monarchy?

New PM Dickon Mitchell says having a ceremonial head of state ‘pointless’.

In one of the biggest election upsets in the English-speaking Caribbean, the governing party in Grenada has been voted out of office by a party led by a political newcomer.

Dickon Mitchell, who took over as opposition leader in 2021, overturned the parliamentary majority of the country's longest-serving head of government, Keith Mitchell.

Dickon Mitchell told Newsday about his plans for the island nation and addressed those calling for the removal of Queen Elizabeth II as their head of state. He said: “I see no reason for having a ceremonial head of state and an elected head of state. It’s really an expensive and in my view pointless and cumbersome government structure for a small island.â€
