Philippines begin new era of Marcos rule

Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr has taken the oath as the next Philippine president, completing a once unthinkable political revival for his family 36 years after his father, Ferdinand Marcos Sr, was ousted by millions of Filipinos in a people power revolution.

His vice-president is Sara Duterte, the daughter of the outgoing president, Rodrigo Duterte.

James Zarsadiaz is an associate professor of history and serves as director of the Yuchengco Philippine Studies Program at the University of San Francisco. He told Newsday: “There’s a closeness there between the Marcos family and the Duterte’s…many of us wouldn’t be surprised if there is a lot of influence from the out-going administration in this new administration.”
