The volunteer US medics training Ukrainian doctors

A group of volunteer doctors from the United States have been involved in training up medics in wartime surgery.

Doctors in Ukraine have been dealing with mass casualties across the country since Russia invaded in late February, against a backdrop of bombardment and a shortage of medical supplies. A group of volunteer doctors from the United States have been involved in training up medics in wartime surgery.

One of those volunteers, critical care specialist Dr Nahren Ahmed, explains why their work is so necessary and how this is different from the standard surgery.

"There's a big difference between the injuries from a car accident or other such traumas that surgeons in Ukraine are very used to. However, injuries from missile strikes causing blast-related wounds or wounds from high velocity bullets and exploding cluster munitions which are the type of ammunition that the Russian army are using - these are profoundly more damaging to human tissue."
