Could a Covid-19 pill be a game-changer for Africa?
The past two years have seen massive inequality in the distribution of Covid-19 vaccines between western countries, but the situation could be about to change.
The African Centre for Disease Control (CDC) has signed a memorandum of understanding with pharma giant Pfizer for access to a new antiviral Covid-19 pill - Paxlovid.
In clinical trials, the pill was shown to reduce the risk of hospitalisation or death by 89% in vulnerable adults.
Deputy Director of Africa CDC, Dr. Ahmed Ogwell, explains how the drug could help change the course the pandemic across the African continent and how it can be used.
According to Dr Ogwell, the newly signed memorandum will give countries across the continent access to the pill at cost price.
