South Africa: 19 shot dead in bar shootings

Two bar shootings in South Africa has left nineteen people dead. Fifteen died in Soweto when men armed with assault rifles and handguns opened fire randomly at drinkers before fleeing in a minibus. Four others were killed in a tavern in the city of Pietermaritzburg in Kwazulu-Natal. Police are trying to verify if the attacks were linked.

Bongekile Macupe is a journalist with City Press. She covers Gauteng, the region in South Africa where this happened. She told Newsday: “We are a country where there is no visible policing and I think that is one of the things that people from that area have raised…to say that lack of physical policing might have led to these deaths because people do not fear anything, they can do whatever they want.”
