Nigeria presidential election: Tinubu’s religious gamble
One of Nigeria's presidential candidates, Bola Tinubu, is causing controversy after breaking a well-established political tradition of choosing a running-mate from a different religion.
Bola Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is a Muslim and would normally be expected to pick a Christian running-mate. Instead, he has picked another Muslim, former Borno State governor, Kashim Shettima.
Sam Olukoya is a journalist in Lagos. He told Newsday that Mr Tinubu is a Muslim from the Christian south and that he is taking “a huge gamble because in trying to get votes from the north, you are also losing a lot of votes from the Christian south…he has a fifty-fifty chance.â€
