Esa officially cuts ties with Russia over Ukraine war
In the last few days Nasa and Roscosmos, the Russian space agency, announced that they have reached an agreement that will integrate flights to the International Space Station.
The collaboration comes after the European Space Agency (Esa) officially terminated its cooperation with Roscosmos on the development of a life-hunting Mars rover mission because of the war in Ukraine.
Esa’s Director-General, Dr Josef Aschbacher, told Newsday the decision to cut ties “is a very painful one. We have invested 15 years of time to develop the various elements of the mission…it was ready for launch in September…the science…now has to wait for a couple of years.”
However he said Nasa’s “crew-swap” agreement with Roscosmos “is highly welcome because it is a safety measure to ensure the safety of our astronauts.”
