Colombia’s authorities blamed for Armero tomb raiders
A once disappeared town in Colombia has been re-discovered only to be raided by tomb raiders. Reports suggest that the bodies and belongings of former inhabitants of the rural town of Armero, which was buried by the eruption of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano in 1985, are now being stolen.
Ramón Campos is a journalist in Bogota. He told Newsday that the “families of the people buried there…are hurt…people know that the dead have gold dental work for instance or that people bury their loved ones with jewellery and stuff that they can steal but most cemeteries are functional and have guards…The problem is that the Armero cemetery, no-one’s guarding it and that’s why tomb raiders have identified it as…an easy target.â€
