Plan to bypass anti-abortion laws in Austin, Texas

Since the US Supreme Court overturned Roe vs Wade, the ruling that guaranteed the right to abortion across the US, dozens of legal battles have been fought in individual jurisdictions across the country. One state where the prohibitions against abortion are particularly tough is Texas but in the liberal-leaning Texan city of Austin, the council is about to consider a motion to effectively decriminalise abortion within its boundaries.

The so-called Grace Act, which stands for Guarding the Right to Abortion Care for Everyone, was introduced by Council member José ‘Chito’ Vela. He told Newsday: “I would really push back against the idea that the people of Texas really want to criminalise abortion. However, our current political leadership – there’s no question, they want to criminalise abortion.â€
