Afghanistan: Thousands of LGBT people trapped with no way out
Charities warn thousands of LGBT people could be trapped in Afghanistan with “no prospect” of leaving and with their lives at risk
Charities warn thousands of people who are LGBT could be trapped in Afghanistan with “no prospect” of leaving and with their lives at risk. It’s almost a year since the Taliban regained control of the country, where homosexuality is criminalised and punishable by death.
The UK organised a special evacuation and relocation programme for LGBT people in the autumn. Other countries, including Canada, have since followed suit.
Maud Goba works for the charity Micro Rainbow which has helped rehabilitate refugees that made it to the UK. She says "we're working with them to start their new lives, in finding jobs, in going back to school and getting to know the UK life". Back in Afghanistan, "life for them was trauma, life for them was violent, life for them was hiding".
She says international governments and charities must do more to help relocate LGBT people still stuck in Afghanistan. "There are still people who are stuck there, people who fear for their lives because they are gay and they afraid of being found out".
