Sri Lanka launches a QR code system to control fuel rations
The Sri Lankan government has introduced a fuel pass, meaning only registered vehicles with a QR code can get fuel at petrol stations from August 1st.
A shortage of fuel started in April due to severe economic turmoil in the country and long queues at petrol stations have continued since.
Dr Harini Amarasuriya is an MP for the opposition National Peoples Power party. She told Newsday people are frustrated and attempts to ration fuel has resulted in a black market.
“It still means standing in a queue for two, two-and-a-half to three days… even the limited amount of fuel that is present is not being distributed fairly because there’s a black market in operation as well.”
