Obstacles faced by Kenya’s female political aspirants
The Kenya Women Parliamentary Association says the majority of female candidates campaigning ahead of elections in the country next week have experienced physical violence, verbal attacks and online abuse.
According to the constitution, political parties have to make sure no one gender occupies more than two-thirds of appointive and elective bodies.
Mercy Mwangi is programme coordinator for the Kenya Women Parliamentary Association. She told Newsday that campaigns “are very money intensive so sometimes you’ll find women attacked until they give some money”. She says such abuse “remains a huge barrier for women participating in politics”.
