Woman whose accusation led to Emmett Till murder will not be charged

A jury in Mississippi has declined to bring charges against the white woman whose accusation led to the 1955 lynching of Emmett Till. Carolyn Bryant Donham, now 87, had faced potential charges of kidnapping and manslaughter of the black boy. But jurors said there was insufficient evidence to indict her. It now looks unlikely she will ever be prosecuted over the events that led to the 14-year-old's death, which galvanised the US civil rights movement.

Gloria J. Browne-Marshall is a civil rights lawyer and Professor of Constitutional Law at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York. She told Newsday that the family of Emmett Till are disappointed but could have predicted the outcome: “That is what criminal injustice has been in America for people of colour, especially African-Americans when the perpetrator is white.”
