Why has ‘Islamic State Beatle’ retained British citizenship?

British counter-terrorism police have arrested a man accused of belonging to an Islamic State group cell that murdered its hostages in Syria. Aine Davis was detained when he flew into Luton airport after his release from a Turkish jail where he served a seven-and-a-half-year sentence for membership of IS. Mr Davis has denied being part of the four-man cell of West Londoners, nicknamed the Beatles because of their English accents.

One cell member was killed in 2015; two others who are in US custody have been stripped of their British citizenship, like many others embroiled in the terror group.

Ragip Soylu is Turkey Bureau Chief for Middle East Eye. He notes that Mr Davis has not been stripped of his British citizenship. He told Newsday: “There’s not much evidence on him other than circumstantial evidence and…he’s served his sentence…I don’t think they’re gonna keep him for a long time.â€
