Struggles of #MeToo in China
Journalist explains difficulties faced by women in China who complain of sexual harassment following the dismissal of Zhou Xiaoxuan’s claim against Zhu Jun
The woman at the centre of a landmark case in China’s #MeToo movement has vowed not to give up her fight after a court rejected her appeal. In 2018, Zhou Xiaoxuan accused a high-profile state TV presenter, Zhu Jun, of forcibly kissing and groping her during a 2014 internship. On Wednesday, a court in Beijing ruled during a closed-door hearing that the evidence was “insufficient” in proving alleged sexual harassment.
Beiyi Seow is a correspondent for news agency AFP in Beijing. She told Newsday that the #MeToo movement around the world faces many difficulties but in China “there are additional challenges…people who want to rally around the #MeToo movement have to contend with online censorship…if they want to discuss #MeToo incidents they often use similar sounding words.”
