Kenya elections: Why was turnout reduced?
With the results of Kenya’s presidential elections due very soon, anticipation is high but, perhaps, not for everyone. Turnout was substantially down on the 2017 elections in east Africa’s regional powerhouse.
Many of Kenya’s youth simply decided not to vote. To explore why so many people failed to exercise their democratic right Newsday spoke to two young Kenyan voters: Catherine Phoro who voted for the first time and, first of all, Kasi Mumba - who chose not to vote:
“It saddened me not to vote… I was just tired, politically-drained. But I just want to see if, this time round, have they realised that us not voting is a protest of some kind to show them the youth do not have the trust they thought they did in this government or in the leaders.”
