Working as a female journalist in Afghanistan
The Taliban have declared a national holiday in Afghanistan to mark one year since they seized power. The anniversary is being marked against the backdrop of a worsening humanitarian crisis and continuing concerns about the rights of women and girls since American forces withdrew last August.
Fatima Faizi is an Afghan journalist. She worked for the New York Times and is now a fellow at Columbia Journalism School in the US. She told Newsday that while it was a struggle for female journalists to work before Taliban rule, the situation has worsened for those who persist: “Some of them didn’t give up, they still go to work but they are asked to remain silent by their bosses and some of them are asked to work from home…because of these restrictions, the family members force them to quit their jobs.”
