2002 Bali bombings: Bomb maker set for early release

The 2002 Bali bombings, which saw more than 200 people killed when an Al Qaeda-linked Indonesian militant group detonated explosive devices which destroyed two popular tourist venues has come back into the spotlight.

Umar Patek, the bomb-maker, who was then a member of the Jemaah Islamiyah group, has had his sentence reduced, and could be free from prison soon - ahead of the twentieth anniversary of the terror attacks.

He was jailed for 20 years in 2012 and has served half his sentence. He is set for possible early release as he is cited by officials as a model prisoner - one who has declared his obedience to the Indonesian authorities.

A survivor of the Bali bombings, Jan Laczynski, who's currently in Melbourne, Australia lost five of his friends in the attack. Newsday caught up with him to gauge his reaction.
