Mikhail Gorbachev: ‘He opened the world…now the world is closed’

Former Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev has died at the age of 91. As a supporter of the de-Stalinization programs of his predecessor Nikita Khrushchev, Gorbachev initiated numerous reforms during his tenure resulting in Russia’s transition from one party rule to a fragile democracy.

Nina Khrushcheva is the great-granddaughter of Nikita Khrushchev, who led the former Soviet Union at the height of the Cold War in the 1950s and 60s. She told Newsday: The whole world should be in Moscow…to say goodbye to this great man…and yet nobody is going to come here. The flight spaces are closed. Putin is not going to let everybody in.â€
