US ban on assault weapons ‘needs to happen’

US President Joe Biden has delivered a speech outlining his concerns about gun violence in the country, specifically the repeated use of assault weapons in mass shootings.

Jessica Ghawi was one of 12 people who died in a shooting at a cinema in Colorado in 2012. She was 24.

Her mother Sandy Philips and stepfather Lonnie Philips have subsequently campaigned against gun violence ever since. Mr Philips told Newsday assault rifles are “the weapon of choice for mass shooters and it’s a weapon most dangerous to our police officers… none of them want to go up against an assault weapon.â€
