Kenya's Supreme Court announces William Ruto as president

After several petitions seeking to annul the result of the 9 August election in Kenya, the nation's Supreme Court has ruled that William Ruto was properly elected president.

He will be sworn in as the country's fifth president next week.

Ruto's opponent Raila Odinga claimed that the election was tainted with fraud.

Mr Odinga lost the election by a small margin with 48.8% of votes, while Mr Ruto garnered 50.5%.

Abuga Makori, a regional coordinator for Raila Odinga's political party ODM spoke to Newsday saying: "We will accept the results of the Supreme Court, because we have the constitutional mechanisms of solving such kind of electoral crisis in Kenya. But we are not really agreeing with the court's decision to uphold William Ruto's victory."
