John Mahama, former president of Ghana on the significance of Queen Elizabeth II's visits to his country.
Queen Elizabeth II acted as head of state for 15 member-states of the Commonwealth, Ghana joined the organisation in 1957, the same year it gained independence.
Former President of Ghana, John Mahama, who led the country between 2012 and 2017 recalls the times that The Queen visited Ghana, and also the time that she hosted him and his wife whilst he was serving president.
He mentions a controversial trip that The Queen made on 9 November 1961. She was advised not to visit to avoid any danger, due to growing political tensions and bombings in the country. However, The Queen made the decision to travel to the country regardless to meet President Kwame Nkrumah, to strengthen relations with Ghana, encouraging the country to remain within the Commonwealth.
John Mahama talks about the time The Queen hosted him and his wife whilst he was serving president of the country, and the times he had conversations with her.
Speaking about her, he says, "I was struck by her personality, a very, very beautiful human being, great soul, great monarch."
