Armenia-Azerbaijan: Dozens dead in overnight clashes
'Heavy weapons used in a sustained attack' have reignited the conflict and left many troops dead.
Tensions are high in the Southern Caucasus after border clashes between Azerbaijani and Armenian troops. The clashes resume a decades-old conflict linked to the disputed territory of Nagorno-Karabakh.
Azerbaijan, which re-gained full control over the territory after a six-week conflict in 2020, confirmed casualties among its forces. Armenia's Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said 49 of its soldiers had been killed.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken urged an immediate end to all hostilities.
Richard Giragosian, Director of the Regional Studies Center think-tank in Yerevan, the Armenian capital, gives his insight into the situation: "It's an expansion geographically of military attacks directed specifically at Armenia proper."
