King Charles III: From campaigning prince to convening monarch
King Charles will act "according to the constitutional parameters of the role" says Julian Payne.
It will be next year at the earliest before King Charles is crowned, but the transition has been immediate. The moment Queen Elizabeth II died, Charles became the monarch.Â
Looking forward to the new Carolean era, what can we expect from King Charles III? Having spent five years as the then Prince's director of communications, Julian Payne knows the king well and shares his private insight into how he will hold himself moving forwards: "My sense is he will be someone who's very in tune with the age, this is a man who cares deeply about the environment, social equality, community integration... He has made it clear that he understands the difference between campaigning prince and convening monarch, where the role is to operate, as he's said many times, according to the constitutional parameters."
