Row over ferrying migrants across the US intensifies
Thousands of migrants have been sent from Republican-led states to Democratic-run areas as part of a growing row with the federal government and the Biden administration.
A debate is raging in the United States about what some have called "a political stunt" by the Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. He flew a group of migrants - including small children with their mothers and one man in his late 60s - from Texas in the south of the US to the Massachusetts island of Martha’s Vineyard in the north-east of the country.
The case is part of a series of moves by southern border state Republican governors to transport migrants and asylum seekers to so-called liberal cities to supposedly embarrass the Biden administration in the run-up to the midterm elections.
Now a lawmaker representing Martha’s Vineyard in the Massachusetts state legislature has requested a federal human trafficking investigation into the actions of Governor DeSantis. Newsday asked Dylan Fernandes, a Democrat, why he was taking action.
“Not only is it a morally criminal thing to use women, children, families as political pawns; I think there are legal implications. They will tell you they were duped… not a single one of them knew they were going to Martha’s Vineyard. There needs to be some accountability here.â€
“Governor Santos is a coward, what is tough is the resilience of the migrants.â€
