Iran protests: How the authorities are responding

The Iranian army has said it will fully support the police as they try to quell nationwide protests sparked by the death of a young woman in custody. Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman died after being arrested by the morality police for allegedly breaking the rule on wearing a headscarf.

At least 30 people are reported to have been killed in a week of unrest in cities and towns across Iran, with women often at the forefront of the protests. The protests are intensifying and the government is using state employees to populate counter-protests on Friday according to Kian Sharifi - ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Monitoring’s Iran specialist.

"More than two-thirds of the country have seen protests. People are targeting ambulances because the police are using them to transport detained protesters."

"The authorities have planned state protests to push protesters back. We don't expect these two groups to clash."
