Fana, Guinea's oldest chimp, has died
Fana, the oldest known chimpanzee in Guinea has died at an estimated 71 years old.She was one of the last members of the Bossou chimpanzees, a sub-species living in the forest across Guinea and Ivory Coast, which is globally famous for their use of tools to break nuts of fetch ants.
Kathelijne Koops, an expert on chimpanzees who has recently seen this group of primates in Guinea, tells Newsday about Fana's legacy and what's next for the Bossou tribe.
"We know a lot about how these chimpanzees have grown up and how they have learnt their different skills and they crack nuts which is one of the most complex types of tool use that we see in non-human primates."
"It’s a very small group now, there are only five chimpanzees left."
