Martin Lewis on mortgages: ‘We’re getting into unaffordability territory’

Personal finance expert Martin Lewis explains the impacts of the 0.5% mortgage increase for people on variable-rate and fixed term mortgages; “the real issue is for people whose fixes come to an end in 12 months”.

Martin is joined by Managing Director of a mortgage brokerage, Andrew Montlake, who explains “it’s all about the individual client… what will cost for them to break their fix rate?”

Andrew adds, “If you're very early on, then it's generally not very worth it… but for people coming off now, that's going to be an extra five or six hundred pounds a month.”

“If rates do go to six percent, then you could see those people paying up to £1000 a month more, which is the real issue.”
