Can Africa be a leader in green energy?
Former oil executive says "most nations are not providing adequately the sort of financing that you would traditionally get to develop fossil fuels".
Delegates from 80 countries are in Cape Town, South Africa for Africa Oil Week with the aim of managing the fossil fuel challenges facing the continent. There is a focus on green energy, with many questioning whether the renewables industry can co-exist with fossil fuel producers.
Dr Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu is the former head of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and an ambassador for Africa Oil Week. He told Newsday: “Africa is not against green energy. We have lots of green energy resources… but the reality is that this takes time to develop and we cannot… abandon the traditional fossil [fuels] that we have. We need to provide energy for our massive populations. We are pointing attention also to the unfairness in the timeline that the world always sets, whether it was during the time of movement from coal, movement from wood… until now, it’s almost like the West will always move ahead and leave Africa behind and then we are left carrying the can.”
