UN: Drought and famine to hit unprecedented levels in Somalia
The United Nations warns of a dire situation in the Horn of Africa, as famine and drought are expected to hit unprecedented levels.
Officials in Somalia have warned that hundreds of thousands of people could die from hunger in the coming weeks, if they do not receive immediate international help.
Aid agencies agree and say the drought in the country is the worst in four decades. Growing numbers of children are already dying.
Hundreds of thousands of people have been forced off their land to look for food and shelter in the region of Baidoa.
The mayor of Baidoa, Abdullahi ali Watiin, told Newsday "People from poor areas are continuing to come to Baidoa, and a number of IDPS (Internally displaced people) who are also arriving in Baidoa are increasing drastically day after day, and we are now counting over 700,000 people who are now hosted in Baidoa".
