Leishmaniasis: New drug works quicker and with less pain
Visceral leishmaniasis a life-threatening disease caused by Leishmania parasites, which are transmitted by female sandflies. Treatment is available, however previous treatments often carried harsh side effects, and it also took a long time for someone to heal.
Now, a medical research NGO named Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) has found a new treatment which they say is safer and easier for people to take.
Dr Fabiana Alves is the head of the DNDi’s Leishmaniasis programme, and she joined Newsday to talk about the new method of treating patients.
