Dame Angela Lansbury has died in Los Angeles at the age of 96, a few days before her 97th birthday.

Lansbury was a titan of film, stage and television - receiving numerous accolades, awards and nominations across the board. From Tony's to multiple Emmy wins and an Oscar.

Perhaps her most well-known role is that of Jessica Fletcher in Murder, She Wrote.

Dominic Patten, senior editor at the entertainment site Deadline, recalls how the show was expected to flop with its network, CBS, receiving "condolences" before it first aired. In actuality it was a roaring success, proving to be "deceptively sublime."

Defying critics, it pushed the British-born actress back into the spotlight during her later career years, just part of a professional life which spanned a period of almost eight decades.
