Alarming rise of 'honour killings' in Sudan

Campaigners and officials in Sudan are concerned about a rise in so-called honour killings. So far this year at least 11 young women have been killed by family members, more than double last year's total. However the real number is thought to be much higher.

The government's efforts to deal with the issue is being hampered by ongoing instability in the country, particularly since the military coup last year.

Sulaima Ishaq Al Khalifa is director general of the government’s Combatting Violence Against Women unit. She told Newsday: “It’s not just about preserving the honour of the tribe and preserving the honour of their family or whatever it is. There is also a suspicion of religious extremism.”
