'My job as a prison officer was getting too dangerous'

Phil Stanbridge worked at Belmarsh High Security Men’s Prison and brought forward his retirement after he felt like his job was getting too dangerous. He claims a drop in prison officers means standards have dropped. Figures from the Ministry of Justice show that in the last year there was a leaving rate of over fifteen percent for officers in bands 3-5, which is rank and file prison offices up to Custodial Managers, in England and Wales. A MoJ spokesperson says 5,000 prison officers will be hired by the mid-2020s and pay has been boosted.
