Uganda Ebola: Cleric urges faithful not to touch

Ebola spreads between humans by direct contact with bodily fluids and contaminated environments.

A prominent Christian cleric in Uganda has urged religious leaders and their congregations to avoid touching in a bid to curb the spread of Ebola. Reverend Daniel Tokens Wejuli's comments came as Uganda grapples with an Ebola outbreak which has so far claimed 19 lives, including one in the capital, Kampala.

In the latest measure to curb the spread of the disease, President Yoweri Museveni ordered traditional healers and herbalists not to treat people who have Ebola-like symptoms.

The reverend, who is in charge of Spirituality and Mindset Change at the Inter-religious Council of Uganda, advises people to seek medical advice in the first instance if they develop any signs or symptoms. He told Newsday: “We do not stop them from coming to us for spiritual healing but we also try to advise our pastors and imams not to touch. You can pray without touching. You can pray without going near to the person.”
