EU puts new sanctions on Iran
Street protests were triggered by the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody after she was arrested for violating the country’s strict hijab laws
European Union member states have agreed to place new sanctions against Iran over the country's crackdown on street protests after the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen tweeted: "The brave Iranian women demand freedom and equality — values that Europe believes in and must speak up for. The violence must stop. Women must be able to choose. This shocking violence cannot stay unanswered. It's time to sanction those responsible for this repression."
Javier Zarzalejos is a Spanish MEP and co-chair of the European Parliament’s Friends of the Free Iran Intergroup. He told Newsday: “Next week we will have new sanctions in place…targeted against high officials of the regime…going beyond the current asset freezes and visa plans…Obviously there is not going to be a regime change from outside Iran but we have to be with the men and women in Iran.”
