China Congress: Xi retains focus on Taiwan

Xi Jinping has opened a key Communist Party summit highlighting China’s growing strength under his first decade in power. However, he also underscored the risks and challenges the country faces, among them reunification with Taiwan. He denounced “foreign interference” for exacerbating tensions, adding that the Taiwan issue is China’s own problem to solve.

Lin Ching-Yi is an MP from the Democratic Progressive Party in Taipei. She told Newsday: “Xi’s speech does not deliver any tiny space for peaceful dialogue between Taiwan and China…Taiwanese are tired about this one-man show…Xi uses democracy to destroy democracy.”
