Brittney Griner's appeal rejected by Russian court

The WNBA player Brittney Griner saw her appeal rejected by a Russian court this week against a nine-year jail sentence for drug charges.

The White House has called legal proceedings against the Phoenix Mercury's eight-time all-star "a sham" and President Biden says negotiations with the Kremlin for her release are ongoing, but some have criticised the lack of progress.

The US House of Representatives passed his bipartisan resolution earlier this year calling for Griner to be freed.

Congressman Greg Stanton, Democratic Representative for Arizona's 9th District, says "Britney Griner needs to be brought home. I know Cherelle, Britney's wife, very much wants people with platforms, politicians, athletes, etc, to speak out as loudly as they can, that it's time to bring Britney Griner home, that she's wrongfully detained".
