Brazil Election: Lula promises eco overhaul
Lula’s environmental adviser warns there will be difficulties implementing change because ‘the Brazilian congress is completely dominated by…very big landowners from Amazonia’.
Brazil's presidential frontrunner Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has pledged that if he is elected, he will halt deforestation in the Amazon and commit the country to zero greenhouse gas emissions.
In an open letter, entitled 'Letter to the Brazil of tomorrow', Lula says he will radically overhaul government policy on the environment.
Deforestation of the Amazon has accelerated under Jair Bolsonaro, who has been criticised for prioritising the interests of loggers and ranchers.
However, analysts have questioned how far his rival would be able to meet his goal of sustainable development while maintaining other campaign pledges.

He told Newsday: “Several issues will depend on the congress and the Brazilian congress is completely dominated by major landowners from Amazonia. This is a problem because their main interest is destroying the Amazon.â€
